If you’re into Motown/soul, you’ll love this – sound and vision.
Documentary film that focuses on the period beginning with the birth of Motown in Detroit in 1958 until its relocation to Los Angeles in the early 1970s. Very much a Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson vehicle (great conversation as the two recall history and events) but full of stunning, largely unseen, archive footage of all the Tamla greats in the studio and in concert: Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, Supremes, Four Tops and the rest: all under one roof in a suburban house in Detroit, a sign hanging above the porch: “Hitsville, USA”. Great clips, great soundtrack. Dirs. Gabe & Ben Turner (US 2018 112 mins cert 12)
Doors and bar open 1.30pm, film starts 2pm.
