On the 21st July Holmfirth Harriers hosted the Holme Moss Fell Race once again from Cartworth Moor Cricket Club near Holmfirth.
As usual most runners turned up in the last 45 minutes before the 11.00 am start but having 4 kit checkers on hand allowed all 119 runners to be kit checked before the start. A few, turning up without sufficient kit, were loaned kit from the ‘emergency kit’ box allowing them all to make the start line. Twelve Harriers took part in the race and over 50 were involved in helping on the day.
The race is a tough AL category event of around 18 miles and about 4000 feet of climb. The race was run in almost perfect running conditions, not too hot, nice springy moorland and just the odd bog to keep it interesting! The route goes from Cartworth Moor to Holme Moss, then over Tooleyshaw Moss to Crowden before climbing up to Bareholme, dropping down to Crowden Great Brook, and then back up to the Pennine Way by the steep climb up Laddow Rocks. The route then follows the Pennine Way to Black Hill before turning back to Holme Moss and back once more to the finish at Cartworth Moor Cricket Club.
Richard Robinson, Sutton-in-Ashfield and Andrew Worcester, Todmorden Harriers led the group at Holme Moss with Lawrence Eccles, Penny Lane Striders not far behind. Helen Berry, Holmfirth Harriers, was first female in 8th overall, about 3 minutes behind the leader.
After Laddow Rocks Andrew made a move and opened a gap on Richard and a further gap developed back to Lawrence still in 3rd. The first three retained their positions back to the finish as did Helen.
All runners and helpers were rewarded with drinks and a great spread of food while waiting for the results.
Many thanks to all 50+ helpers from Holmfirth Harriers, Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team, for whom we raised £330, Debbie and Garry Devine for the fantastic prize at Alps Haven, all land owners and stakeholders, plus our sponsor Brooklands Nursery.
